Best hiking trails in Katherine
1. Jatbula Trail
62 km, 5-6 days
This iconic 62 km journey winds you through the diverse landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park, from lush monsoonal forests to sandstone escarpment. The trail is named after Jawoyn Traditional Owner Peter Jatbula, who was instrumental in securing land rights for the Jawoyn people.
Departing from Nitmiluk Gorge and finishing at Leliyn (Edith Falls), Jatbula can be completed in 5 or 6 days (4 or 5 nights). Every night you'll camp at a campground with its own unique water source. Whether it’s a billabong, waterfall or cascading rock pools, each spot is truly special.
Throughout the dry season, a maximum of 15 people are allowed on the trail each day to avoid overcrowding. Spots on the trail go like hotcakes, so keep an eye out for when bookings open and snatch up your spot early.
2. Sweetwater Pool
9km, 3.5 hours
While exploring Edith Falls north of Katherine, do the scenic 9 km return walk from the carpark to Sweetwater Pool - the last stop on the epic Jatbula Trail. Every step of this steady uphill climb will be worth it once you arrive at this Nitmiluk gem. At Sweetwater you'll be welcomed by an expansive waterhole, practically begging you to jump in and cool off after your hike. Sweetwater is a bit of a hidden paradise, not as frequented as the Edith Top Pools down the track, so if you're lucky you might just have the place all to yourself.
3. Baruwei Walk
If you’re looking for an easier walk that still packs a punch when it comes to views, the Baruwei Lookout is short, sweet and spectacular. The walk to the lookout is a 1.8 km return and gives you panoramic views over Nitmiluk Gorge and 17 Mile Valley. If you’re hungry for more scenic wonders, extend your journey and take on the Baruwei Loop Walk which continues along the escarpment.
4. Southern Walks
Varying distance
If you’re itching for a multi-day hike in Nitmiluk that isn’t Jatbula, we recommend the network of Southern Walks. These lesser-travelled trails take you through incredible stone country around Nitmiluk Gorge.
Here's a three day itinerary option:
Day 1: Nitmiluk Visitor Centre to Smitt Rock
Day 2: Smitt Rock to Eighth Gorge
Day 3: Eighth Gorge to Nitmiluk Visitor Centre
There’s two trail options - the Waleka Walk or the Yambi Walk. The Yambi Walk is slightly longer but less challenging than the Waleka Walk. Some hikers choose to do a mix of both.
You could also choose to do an overnighter or day walk if you're looking for a shorter adventure. Check out the Southern Walks and Trails Information Sheet to plan your journey.
5. Northern Rockhole
9km, half day
This half day walk will take you along the very first part of the Jatbula Trail to breathtaking Northern Rockhole. Climb over volcanic rocks to reach the plunge pool and towering single drop waterfall. Take a dip in the refreshing waters and relax on the rocks while soaking in the ancient Jawoyn landscapes. You’ll need to book a ferry to cross the gorge and arrive at the start of your walk, which you can organise through the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre.
