1. Explore Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge)

Make sure you put Nitmiluk Gorge high on your Katherine bucket list. On Jawoyn Country, the gorge winds through the ancient sandstone landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park. There’s lots of ways you can discover the area; jump on a cruise and soak up all the scenic gorge goodness, join a cultural tour, hire a canoe and venture at your own pace, or hit the network of hiking trails around the gorge. 2. Journey underground at the Cutta Cutta Caves

Time to head underground and explore the hidden limestone formations of the Cutta Cutta Caves, just 27 km south of Katherine. Formed over millions of years, see the sparkling stalactites and stalagmites and learn about the seriously cool geology of this unique cave system. Nitmiluk Tours run guided Cutta Cutta Cave tours on the hour between April and October, with the first tour at 9am and the last tour at 3pm.

3. Beat the heat at Katherine Hot Springs

When the outback sun gets too hot to handle, escape to the soothing waters of Katherine Hot Springs. Tucked among lush green vegetation, these natural thermal pools offer you a little slice of paradise to unwind and rejuvenate. Despite their name, the springs are generally a perfect moderate temperature. Even better, they’re a short 5 minute drive from Katherine town centre. After your swim refuel at Pop Rocket Cafe, just up the stairs from the Hot Springs next to the car park.

4. Check out the Katherine Museum

Get a glimpse into Katherine’s fascinating past with a visit to the Katherine Museum. The collections tell the stories of the people who have lived in the region, their resilience and how history has shaped Katherine as it is today. Wander through the indoor and outdoor exhibits and learn about key events from WWII to extreme flooding. The museum is also housed in a former WWII regional air terminal, with a unique tale to tell of its own.

5. Get a taste of outback life

Discover the true spirit of the outback at Katherine Outback Experience, owned by multiple Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinaire Tom Curtain. This is where the Northern Territory's rich pastoral history and culture comes alive, with real horse starting, working dog demos, live music and storytelling. The Outback Show takes the spotlight as the main attraction, but you can also saddle up and experience the thrill of horse riding if you’re keen for more adventure.
